Each year in Colorado, more than 20,000 people are arrested for DUI \u2014 an average of\u00a054\u00a0every day. And, in 2017,\u00a0more than\u00a0200 people\u00a0were killed in alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes on Colorado roads.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To combat this\u00a0critical issue, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) teamed up with leading\u00a0breathalyzer company, BACtrack\u00ae<\/span>, in\u00a0an unprecedented partnership to\u00a0encourage the use of smartphone breathalyzers. CIG was tasked with raising awareness for\u00a0this unique promotion and educating residents about the benefits of\u00a0personal\u00a0breathalyzers to prevent\u00a0impaired driving.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

CIG set out to change the stigma around breathalyzer use and\u00a0encourage Coloradans to\u00a0adopt the tool as a way to make more\u00a0informed decisions when drinking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

CIG\u00a0employed a mix of\u00a0traditional\u00a0and non-traditional tactics to\u00a0bring\u00a0the discounted<\/span> smartphone breathalyzers to the attention of alcohol consumers across the state.\u00a0First and foremost, we wanted to bring the breathalyzers directly to our target audience, and better yet, while they\u2019re actively imbibing.<\/span><\/p>\n

We attended alcohol-centric events throughout the state, offering free breathalyzer tests and demonstrations to\u00a0attendees, as well as information on how to redeem the discount.\u00a0Partnering with\u00a0Geeks Who Drink, the nation\u2019s largest organizer of bar trivia events, CIG helped to host custom,\u00a0educational DUI-trivia rounds in\u00a0136 bars\u00a0across Colorado.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As both a research and media relations strategy, CIG also helped recruit individuals between the ages of 21 to 34 to receive a\u00a0free breathalyzer in return for providing survey feedback about their alcohol and breathalyzer use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Results<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The results speak for themselves. CIG recorded more than 1,200 breath alcohol content (BAC) readings at events, festivals and bar activations statewide, and more than\u00a0800 individuals applied to receive a free breathalyzer as part of CDOT\u2019s\u00a0breathalyzer\u00a0program.\u00a0In total, more than\u00a02,800 people redeemed the discounted breathalyzers during the campaign.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The campaign garnered 76.9 million impressions from 551 online articles, 412 television hits and 51 print stories.<\/span><\/p>\n

Research showed promising trends toward changing Coloradans\u2019 behavior when it comes to impaired driving. BACtrack.com<\/a> breathalyzer sales in Colorado in 2017-2018 were the highest in the nation. In Amazon.com sales, Colorado ranked second per capita in 2017-2018 and ranked first in per capita breathalyzer use, more than four times the national average.<\/p>\n
